We are pleased to announce that we recently certified Rio Tinto owned ships.
Alastair Fischbacher, a former master mariner and now RTS’s senior representative in London, gives his insight into the role of Green Award in the shipping industry and reasons the decision of Rio Tinto to go for Green Award:
“As a major shipper and charterer Rio Tinto has been very conscious of the wide variety of ships that are offered to and used by us in the course of our business. Through our chartering practices, including our involvement with Rightship, we have sought to influence and improve the quality of bulk shipping and access those ships that meet high standards. With our recent entry into ship owning we had the opportunity to demonstrate our commitment through the attainment of the Green Award on our owned fleet. While the scheme was initially developed for the tanker sector, the extension into the dry bulk sector is welcomed and we are delighted that our ships have achieved the high standards required. The Green Award represents a real commitment to sustainable development and is a real differentiator in the shipping industry today; we hope that other like-minded owners will embrace the scheme.”
