Explanation Green Award logo

We have been asked to explain the Green Award logo which the represents Poseidon with his trident.

In ancient Greece, Poseidon was the god of the sea and protector of the waters. Poseidon was widely worshiped by ancient Greek fishermen. Poseidon was said to drive a chariot pulled by horses carrying a trident.

In the Green Award logo the trident symbolizes the Green Award requirements:

1. basic criteria
2. crew/management criteria
3. technical requirements

The crew and management criteria are the most important criteria for Green Award; these criteria are symbolized by the largest tooth of the trident.

Poseidon looks sternly at his environment, the sea. Through his requirements he safeguards the environment which is symbolized by the color green. The waves represent the dynamic character of Green Award (changing requirements, raising the standards) and the working area, the sea. The logo was designed by dutch graphic designer Henk Knoeff, www.kruit.nl.
