First LNG-powered inland container barge gets a “Golden” Green Award certificate

Again a milestone for Green Award: in the summer of 2014 Green Award certified MCS Eiger. The ship’s score reached the golden level.

Danser Group, the owner of the barge, introduced the first container carrying inland barge in the Netherlands fueled by LNG. The main engines are for 99% LNG-powered. This will reduce CO2 emissions by 40%, NOx emissions by 90% and particulate matter by 90%.

This type of improvements is welcomed by Green Award as it creates a “greener” image of the inland navigation sector. Green Award is pleased to see that there are more and more inland shipping entrepreneurs who take responsibility and dare to invest in “green” improvements onboard. The foundation in its turn works on getting a better recognition and thus more incentives for such ships.
