Marine publisher goes Green

Witherby Publishing Group, the world’s leading publisher of marine titles, is joining the Green Awards scheme to support good practice and offer additional benefits to certificate holders.

Green Award surveys and certifies ships and ship managers that demonstrate excellent performance. To obtain a Green Award certificate, ships and companies must meet strict requirements covering safety, quality, human element aspects and environmental footprint.

The certificate is recognized by the industry as a quality mark and rewarded with various benefits by ports and maritime products and services suppliers. In support of the initiative, Witherbys will offer all Green Award certificate holders a 10 percent reduction across its catalogue of publications.

Speaking about joining the scheme, Iain Macneil, Chief Executive Officer of Witherbys, said: “I’m especially pleased to join the scheme as in 1994 I was a young third officer on a ship, the Esso Hawaii, which was the first-ever to receive a Green Award. As a company we’re committed to promoting sustainable and environmentally responsible shipping.”

“Proper and timely information about standards of the maritime industry, the best practices and effective preventive measures is crucial for the safety of shipping. Publishers providing reliable and relevant publications play an essential role in enabling the industry to improve quality and safety levels,” said Jan Fransen, executive director Green Award.

“We welcome Witherbys decision to join the Green Award scheme; many of its books are fixtures on the bridges and engine rooms of ships sailing around the globe.”

Witherby Publishing Group is the oldest independent publisher in the English-speaking world with more than 500 titles incorporating technical and operational guidance, best practice and regulatory information.
