   Season's greetings

Port Metro Vancouver incentive changed

Starting 1 January 2010, the discount of 21% is also applicable to Green Award ships calling ports on the Fraser River.

The Differentiated Harbour Dues program applies to ships calling Port Metro Vancouver. This includes the Burrard Inlet, Roberts Bank and (new) starting January 1, 2010 also the Fraser River.  Port Metro Vancouver recognizes Green Award certified vessels as eligible at the Bronze level under the Differentiated Harbour Dues Program. This means that a rebate of 21% over the basic harbour dues rate is applicable to Green Award certified vessels.

Port Nelson started with GA incentive

From 1st December 2009 Port Nelson joined the scheme and provides a discount of 5% to Green Award certificate holders.

Starting 1 December 2009, the port offers a 5% discount off tariff price for marine services for all tankers and bulk carriers certified by Green Award.

Port Nelson lies at the head of Tasman Bay, in the shelter of Nelson Haven, a broad tidal expanse bounded by the Boulder Bank. Nelson’s broad export base attracts major international shipping lines.

Port Nelson Ltd is committed to improving upon its environmental performance, with an Environmental Consultative Committee meeting monthly to progress issues. Their aim is to minimise environmental impacts of all port operations, rather than just operating at the legal limit.

Annual Report 2008-2009

The new Green Award annual report has been published.

Work of Green Award certificate holders, crew onboard, bureau staff, photographer and designers resulted in the new vivid Green Award annual report. It is a special issue on the occasion of the celebration of our 15th anniversary in 2009. The report has just been published and will be posted to our stake holders shortly.

The Annual Report 2008-2009 can be downloaded here.

Tariffs: no increase for tankers, increase for bulk carriers

For the 8th year in a row tankers' application and annual fees remain the same. However the fees for bulk carriers will be raised per 1 January 2010.

Green Award does its best to keep the tariffs manageable for the certificate holders. But at the same time we have to set tariffs in accordance with time, effort and cost involved. Therefore, considering the amount of time and work invested in bulk carriers certification, Green Award has to raise the fees with 10%. Currently bulk carriers pay less than tankers and Green Award intends to treat these types of vessels equally.

Fees for tankers will not be changed and remain the same as in 2009, which equal to the level of 2002.

The tariff list can be found here.

Green Award proceeds with LNG

During some presentations in 2009, the Green Award Foundation indicated that the Green Award certification program might become available for LNG carries. We are pleased to announce that at their meeting on 14th December 2009, the Green Award Committee approved the plan.

Currently the research and certification departments of Green Award work hard on the development of the requirements. Industry experts are involved in the consultations and Green Award intends to finalize the requirements and open the LNG certification in Summer 2010.

Requirements for vessels and operators willing to enrol LNG carriers for Green Award will be made known once Green Award officially announces the start of the certification of this new type of vessels.

The Foundation plans to extend the scheme to other types of vessels in the future as well.

Green Award 'Blue Label'

A new special additional label marking low ship exhaust emissions will be launched by Green Award.

As a result of own research and the feedback received from the shipping industry, Green Award Foundation decided to emphasize the issue of exhaust emissions from ships. The foundation considers revising this element drastically and intends to implement new additional requirements items which, if met by the vessel, will give the vessel a special 'blue label'.

'Blue label' is an additional award that won’t affect a “normal” Green Award certificate, but will be issued in addition to it to show the extra effort put in by ship owners and managers and to motivate the industry to comply. The Blue Label will be issued to ships when the obtained ranking scores meet particular exhaust emission requirements that go beyond international regulations.

The Foundation expects to launch the Blue Label in Summer 2010.
