Green Award Foundation Annual Report 2001

2001 was a remarkable year for Green Award. The acquisition of the THOR HEYERDAHL International Maritime Environmental Award 2001, which is sometimes referred to as the‘Nobel Prize for the Maritime Environment’ was undoubtedly the main highlight of the year. The award confirms the impact that the Green Award scheme
has had on the marine industry. And there is more good news, in 2001:

• Our ‘fleet’ grew from 8.5 % to 10 % of the relevant world tanker fleet
• This fleet carried 22 % of all sea-borne oil
• There was a net increase of 18 % in the number of certificated vessels
• The number of qualified Green Award surveyors increased from 3 to 9
• Hamburg joined the scheme as a participating port

A complete Annual Report 2001 has been sent to our incentive providers and participants and can be downloaded here (PDF-format, 844 kB) or be sent on request by e-mail.

International Marine Environmental Awareness Course (4-7 November 2002)

In co-operation with the North Sea Foundation, the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), presently one of the major European oceanographic institutes, has developed an International Marine Environmental Awareness Course.

The goal of the course is to give senior students of Maritime Universities and staff of Shipping Companies an up to date knowledge of the most important physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the marine environment. This should lead to a better understanding of the different sets of rules in international legislation, e.g. the ISM-code and the Marpol treaty with its annexes relating to different sources of pollution by ships. A better understanding of the scientific rationale will finally result in a better compliance with the environmental regulations in everyday practice on board ships.

As Green Award also has the ambition to increase the understanding and awareness of the importance to protect the marine environment, Green Award is very honoured that Capt. Ben Metselaar, Survey Manager Green Award, has been invited to be one of the lecturers of the course. Capt. Metselaar's presentation is titled: The marine environment: efforts versus benefits.

Green Award dataprovider for Equasis

Equasis brings all players involved in the various various fields of marine business together in an effort to improve marine safety. It is a tool to make the information relating to the quality of ships and their operators transparent.

While much relevant information is collected and available, it is scattered and often difficult to access. One of the main conclusions of the Quality Shipping Conference in Lisbon in June 1998, was a unanimous call from the participants, representing the whole range of industry professionals (including ship owners, cargo owners, insurers, brokers, classification societies, agents, ports and terminals), to make such information more accessible. In response to this call, the European Commission and the French Maritime Administration decided to co-operate in developing an information system collating existing safety-related information on ships from both public and private sources and making it available on the Internet. The result is: http://www.equasis.org.

The present version of the Equasis database has been fed with data supplied by several providers. For example: Port State Control Regimes, Private vetting Schemes, IACS Classification Societies and International Group of P&I Clubs. Green Award also is a dataprovider for the Equasis database.

The main principles, in setting up, the Equasis information system are as follows:

  • Equasis should be a tool aimed at reducing substandard shipping, and it should be limited to safety-related information on ships.
  • Equasis has no commercial purpose; it addresses a public concern and should act accordingly.
  • Equasis should be an international database covering the whole world fleet.
  • Active co-operation with all players involved in the maritime industry is needed.
  • Equasis will be a tool used for a better selection of ships, but it will be used on a voluntary basis; there will be no legal pressure for industry to use Equasis.

The setting-up and effective operation of Equasis will promote the exchange of unbiased information and transparency in maritime transport and thus allow persons involved in maritime transport to be better informed about the performance of ships and maritime organisations with which they are dealing.

The Green Award website is linked to the Equasis-website, http://www.equasis.org.
