New Green Award Incentive Provider: Porto de Setúbal (
Portugal)

Green Award is happy to announce that Porto de Setúbal (Portugal) is a confirmed Green Award incentive provider.

The Port of Setúbal is very important for the hinterland which includes all the main production centres south of the River Mondego (i.e. the southern half of the country) and in Spanish Extremadura. Setúbal is situated on the crossroads of the main north-south and east-west sea routes.

Porto de Setúbal grants Green Award tankers and bulk carriers a 3% premium on the Tariff for port use (TUP) (oil tankers)

Green Award and Transport Canada

Bureau Green Award has been in regular contact with Transport Canada on the subject of green shipping since early December 2000. In the summer of 2003, our Deputy Managing Director Mr. Jan Fransen was travelling in Canada and visited several interested parties. He was happy to give several presentations on Green Award and to learn more about the Canadian intentions to develop an incentive based green support system for ships entering and operating in Canadian waters.

The Green Award Foundation, as an independent, neutral and non-profit organisation, is willing and able to offer know-how, expertise, strategy and implementations to jointly develop a Canadian Green Shipping system that can be linked with the Green Award system. Apart from the certificates for oil tankers and dry cargo bulkers which already exist, the development of a dedicated certificate for the domestic "lakers" is possible.

A major advantage of this proposal is that Canada does not have to invest large amounts of money to develop a green system as Green Award has done that already. Such a Green Ship Award program would offer a number of benefits for the shipping industry, coastal communities, wildlife and the environment. Previous consultation with marine sector stakeholders has determined that there is significant support for a Green Ship Award certification program in Canada.

To implement such a program, Transport Canada is holding the next stage of consultations. Houlihan & Associates, a Vancouver-based firm, is charged with facilitating the consultations.

Renewed certificate for Expedo Ship Management

Expedo is part of a ship management group which, for over 40 years, has provided services to charterers and owners of tankers, bulkers and general cargo ships trading worldwide. The company has experienced, professional staff both ashore and onboard, operating in accordance with the shipping industry's highest standards. Expedo is committed foremost to every aspect of safety and to protection of the environment.

Recently, the office of Expedo withstood the test of the Green Award audit again and received the Green Award Office Certificate, which is valid for another 3 years. A reaction from Expedo:

"The initial motivation for Expedo to join Green Award is simply to receive a discounted port due in some ports when vessel visits those ports.

But after 3 years with the program, we realize that we benefit not only just a discounted port due but also a better management. Expedo is now proud of being part of Green Award".

Short Sea Shipping and Green Award

The Dutch Short Sea Shipping (SSS) industry has shown an interest in co-operating with Green Award. The idea is to create an incentive scheme for SSS Vessels whereby NML takes the financial risk and Green Award delivers the expertise. A pilot study concerning Incentive Schemes for SSS is currently in progress in the form of a final thesis by Ms. Jacqueline Oud, graduate student from the Technical University of Delft.

The results will be avaible soon.
