Green Award News 2004 - 1

Good start for Green Award

The Green Award Foundation started the year 2004 with a balance of 150 certified vessels. In 2003, 24 certificates were issued and 44 were withdrawn. We are pleased that we, now in January, are in receipt of a large amount of new applications, there are 22 new applications in process! A real good start for the year, which will be a remarkable year. We, for example, will celebrate the Green Award 10th Anniversary and expect important developments in Japan.

Tariffs 2004 equal to 2003

For the year 2004, the Green Award Tariffs are not increased. This is the second time in the history of Green Award that we can afford not to increase the tariffs. This means, that the Tariffs 2002 are still maintained. We are glad to share this success of Green Award with our participants and are grateful to them for their efforts and confidence.

Progression made on the green certificate for shortsea shipping

The Dutch Short Sea Shipping (SSS) industry has shown an interest in co-operating with Green Award. The idea is to create an incentive scheme for SSS Vessels whereby the Dutch Maritime Network takes the financial risk and Green Award delivers the expertise. A pilot study concerning Incentive Schemes for SSS is currently in progress in the form of a final thesis by Ms. Jacqueline Oud, graduate student from the Technical University of Delft.

After several months of hard work a first version of the green shortsea shipping certificate was put to the test. On the 8th of January of this year an initial pilot survey of the certificate was conducted onboard the 'Arklow Sand', a multipurpose vessel owned by Arklow Shipping. The survey was conducted by surveyor Rob den Heijer and graduate student Ms. Jacqueline Oud, who developed the certification.
During the next 2 months several more of these pilot surveys will be conducted on other vessels, after which several adjustments will be made to the certification. Following these adjustments we hope to begin with the certification of shortsea shipping vessels.
