Tariffs unchanged

For the third subsequent year, Green Award has been able to maintain the same level of fees. This means that the tariffs for application fees, office audit fees and annual fees will not increase in 2005.

Dutch Pilots' Incentives

Green Award is pleased that the Dutch Pilots have granted the Green Award ships a financial incentive. For the third successive year, every Green Award ship received a financial incentive for every call at Rotterdam.

Dutch Pilots offer their services 24 hours a day to all incoming and outgoing vessels irrespective of type and size. It is their aim to ensure a quick and safe passage of vessels to, through and from the various ports in The Netherlands and Belgium as well as to safeguard the interests of the environment. As Green Award also focuses on the protection of the environment, the Dutch Pilots express their appreciation of the quality and safety standards implemented by Green Award certified vessels through the provision of an incentive..

From the start of Green Award, The Dutch Pilot's Organisation has been a firm supporter of Green Award. Green Award is grateful to the pilots for their continuous trust in the development of Green Award and its participants.

Offshore Arabia Event 2004, Dubai

The Offshore Arabia 2004 event was organised by Saudi Aramco and RECSO (Regional Clean Sea Organisation), with strong technical participation from IMO, UNESCO, UNEP, Shipping Association, International Oil Companies Association (IPIECA & OGP), ROPME, National Environmental Agencies, Shipping, Ports and Harbours.

Green Award was invited to play an important role during the event; Hans de Goeij as Chairman of the session "Oil Spill Management" and as speaker in the session "Marine Protection Efforts" and Jan Fransen as workshop leader for a workshop entitled "Safety and Environmental Behaviour of Management, Crew and Ship" (see item below).

The conference started with HRH Prince Turki Bin Nasser, President, Presidency of Meteorology & Environment, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as Guest of Honour and keynote speaker. The speech was a direct report on why and how the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia takes its responsibility concerning the protection of the environment in the Arabian world.

Hans de Goeij indicated how the protection of the environment can be linked to commercial sense. In his speech he explained how Green Award can play an important role.

Green Award was pleased with the opportunity to participate in the conference. We have been able to follow up our plans to contact Arabian Environmental Authorities and to make some appointments. We are convinced that we have contacted first-class organizations which have an open mind to co-operate and co-create developments for the benefit of maritime safety and the environment in the Middle East area.

Workshop at full speed..

Successful Green Award Workshop in Dubai

During the Offshore Arabia 2004 event in Dubai, a pre-conference workshop on Safety and Environmental Behaviour of Management, Crew and Ship was held on 27 & 28 November by Jan Fransen of the Green Award Foundation.

The main topics of this two-day workshop were Crew Ownership, Environmental Awareness of Management and Crew, Management Systems and Design & Maintenance. Addressing the human factor was the main focus of the workshop program. The intention was to encourage participants to critically reflect on how to effectively use options available in the industry which can enhance the quality of the people behind shipping operations. The participants, mainly representing the marine industry in the Persian Gulf Region, lively discussed the topics presented and actively worked out several cases that ended with well-considered conclusions.

The Green Award team looks back on a successful workshop.

Short Sea Shipping

During the last couple of months a lot of work has been carried out on the development of a new certificate for shortsea shipping. (See also the Green Award news archive, 2004 # 3)

On the 20th of October the first meeting of the advisory body was held at the offices of Green Award in Rotterdam. This advisory body consists of several stakeholders from the Dutch Maritime sector and will advise the bureau in such a way that proper certification will be developed. The meeting resulted in several excellent recommendations that will be put to the test in the near future.

Over the past 2 months, 3 pilot surveys have been carried out onboard vessels under the management of Wijnne en Barends, a Dutch shortsea operator. These surveys provided us with a good indication on how the sector operates and which problems we can expect during an actual survey. Currently the existing survey method is under review and will lead towards a new way of conducting shortsea shipping surveys in the near future. Results on this new method will be available in due course.

For further information on this project please contact Bureau Green Award.

From the website of Knutsen OAS Shipping:

"Knutsen OAS Shipping has world class environmental- and safety standards

Knutsen OAS Shipping AS is among the best in the world, and the Knutsen tankers meet the very strict requirements for environment and safety set by the Green Award Foundation.
This is the conclusion drawn by Survey Manager Ben Metselaar and Surveyor Rob den Heijer after two days inspection in the main office in Haugesund.
The crude oil tankers in the Knutsen OAS fleet are all regarded as clean ships, and they are entitled to fly the green flag from their mast.
Green Award Foundation is an international enviromental organisation based in Rotterdam in Holland, and the foundation has so far issued Green Award Certificates to 155 oiltankers from 35 different shipowners around the world.
Ten tankers in the Knutsen OAS fleet are among the 155 vessels world wide to meet Green Award's tough demands".
