Rotterdam Pilots ISPO certified

The Dutch Pilot's Organisation Rijnmond is the first pilot's organisation in the world which has been certified according the International Standard for Pilots Organisations (ISPO). The ISPO code has been developed by the EMPA (European Maritime Pilots Organisation) in cooperation with Lloyd’s Register.

EMPA decided to develop the ISPO-Code on the initiative of queries from the tanker industries. The ISPO code is way ahead of any guidelines or directives from authorities and links up very well with the ISM-Code and ISO 9000/2000. Compliance with the ISPO-Code guarantees for example that a review of the passage plan with the Master of a ship and the pilotage procedures are documented and agreed upon prior to announcement of the voyage-plan.

Mr Juha Tulimaa (President of the European Maritime Pilots’ Association (EMPA) handed the ISPO certificate over to Mr. E.M. (Eric) van Dijk, chairman of the Rotterdam Pilots, during an official ceremony in Rotterdam on 19th January 2005.

From the start of Green Award, the Dutch Pilot's Organisation has been a firm supporter of Green Award. Green Award is grateful to the pilots for their continuous trust in the development of Green Award and its participants. For the third successive year, every Green Award ship received a financial incentive for every call at Rotterdam.

Mr. Jan Fransen, Green Award's deputy managing director, took the opportunity to demonstrate Green Award's gratitude by handing over an official plaque for Green Award incentive providers.
He also expressed the hope that other pilot organisations will follow the initiative of the Dutch Pilot's Organisation Rijnmond soon since the good interaction between pilots and ship's crews are of paramount importance in preventing accidents.

Green Award and Executive Ship Management

"As a quality ship manager, Executive Ship Management (ESM) takes pride in seizing opportunities to add value to its services. One such opportunity, which came by in 2003, was “Green Award”, as one of our esteemed clients - BP shipping requested us to get one of their ships under our management certified for the award. ESM received this prestigious award following the very thorough auditing of ESM, Singapore office as well the Aframax tanker under management – M.T. British Willow - by the Green Award auditors.

At ESM we have now integrated three systems ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment Management System) and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety) with the ISM Code so that we have an operating system that is robust, forward-looking and indeed focused on our core values of being committed to a safer and cleaner environment in all spheres of our operation. Although, as a management company ESM is not a direct beneficiary of the cost benefits, which Green Award certification entails at ports of call, we have immense satisfaction that our principals reap benefits from the award and it has been our constant endeavour to impress upon our other clients with ships trading in Europe to avail of this great opportunity.

It is our strong conviction that a ship is only as good as the crew who sail her. Executive Ship Management is perhaps the only third party manager in the world, which has built an in-house world-class maritime training institute at a cost of over four million US dollars to exclusively train our own officers and crew. Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, (SIMS), a post–sea training centre located at Mumbai, India provides free value-added, practical training to each crew member prior to his/her boarding a vessel under our management. It has the unique distinction of offering various courses approved under a number of ship administrations, including the Government of India, Singapore, the MCA and Liberia to name a few.

The institute is well known for its most modern and innovative infrastructure including a downsized stainless steel cargo tank fitted with the real life equipment including an operational Framo pump as fitted in a ship.

What differentiates the training in SIMS from other commercial maritime training institutes is its single-minded commitment to provide a top class post-sea training and together with a follow-up system on board through the trainers sailing as a part of the assessment programme.

To complement the post-sea training, ESM is soon initiating a pre-sea training programme at Lonavala, some 100 km away from Mumbai, India at a cost of over 8 million US dollars. The campus which will be made ready in three phases, will have the first batch of cadets intake by July 1, 2005.With an all India selection system to select the best young men to join the seafaring profession, ESM is well poised to take over its future vessels for management with some of the most qualified and best trained crew in the world!"

Carsten P. Melchiors Green Award Committee member

Carsten Melchiors, Secretary General of BIMCO since 1 December 2004, will join the Green Award Committee on 1 April 2005.

BIMCO is today the world’s largest and most diverse private shipping organisation. BIMCO has come a long way since it's beginnings and the organisation’s agenda today differs greatly from that of the past. However, its objective of uniting shipping interests and pursuing the issues affecting its members remain as clear now as they were at the start.

Throughout it's history, BIMCO has consistently managed to be both flexible and supportive of its members’ interests, capable of proactive action and responding quickly to new priorities in a fast-changing maritime environment in an often uncertain world.

Today, BIMCO’s membership spans 123 countries and includes more than 2,550 companies. Owner members alone control 65% of the world merchant fleet, while 1,500 brokers and agents and 100 club and associate members complete BIMCO’s international coverage. It is on behalf of these members that BIMCO carries out its tasks - ranging from involvement in international debates on issues affecting the industry to providing assistance in recovering unpaid balances.

Rejuvenation of Green Award Database and Certification department

On 17 February 2005 Green Award officially launched a new internal database system and started the reorganised Certification Department .

Due to an ever-increasing workload and as a result of a review of the internal and external Green Award processes, the team decided on an in-depth evaluation of certification procedures. It also proved to be a fitting moment to develop a new database which now enables Green Award to monitor, support and to improve the entire process.

The new database has a lot of new features. The application has been created ‘in-house’ and is therefore tailor made. It was built in close cooperation with the users and is very easy to use and quick to understand because of its logical construction. It enables us to keep a better track of our certification procedure and to share information. It also offers a lot of statistical information, which – if relevant - will be shared with our certificate holders and incentive providers.

The Green Award Team celebrated the new start with a special cake which was decorated with a copy of the start screen of the database application. Although the cake is long gone, the database will prove to be a most useful tool!

Explanation Green Award logo

We have been asked to explain the Green Award logo which the represents Poseidon with his trident.

In ancient Greece, Poseidon was the god of the sea and protector of the waters. Poseidon was widely worshiped by ancient Greek fishermen.  Poseidon was said to drive a chariot pulled by horses carrying a trident.

In the Green Award logo the trident symbolizes the Green Award requirements:

1. basic criteria
2. crew/management criteria
3. technical requirements

The crew and management criteria are the most important criteria for Green Award; these criteria are symbolized by the largest tooth of the trident.

Poseidon looks sternly at his environment, the sea. Through his requirements he safeguards the environment which is symbolized by the color green. The waves represent the dynamic character of Green Award (changing requirements, raising the standards) and the working area, the sea. The logo was designed by dutch graphic designer Henk Knoeff, www.kruit.nl
