Novoship certified by Green Award

"Novoship (UK) Ltd. owns and manages a young fleet of around 40 tankers of NOVOSHIP Group fleet, which has a new building programme for another 19 vessels to be delivered. We have an expanding fleet of Third Party vessels under full management and this part of the business is growing.

WHY GREEN AWARD FOUNDATION CERTIFICATION?
Last year the President of NOVOSHIP Group gave us a mandate to make a total review of, and to upgrade our basic Safety Management System. We embarked on what seemed like an ambitious schedule, but, with full management support, a lot of hard work in the office and fleet, and with a concentrated team effort we gained certification to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and we are poised to complete total computerisation of our Quality Management System.
We are proud of our achievement.

The prestigious GREEN AWARD CERTIFICATE was a logical next step towards putting ‘icing on the top of the cake’, to place Novoship among the very top echelon of owners and managers within the industry. The GREEN AWARD is absolutely optional and in that respect it demonstrates the determination of Novoship to stay at the leading edge. It also supports our commitment to a dynamic, efficient, environmental management style, compatible with our Mission Statement. Apart from the obvious financial benefits offered by the coveted GREEN AWARD FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE , we have enjoyed the self-esteem associated with being recognised as an environmentally caring company. It is appreciated and honoured by all staff. The office audit was a pleasant experience of information exchange, with GREEN AWARD FOUNDATION auditors in the driving seat and Novoship reaping the benefit of guidance.

This award has inspired Novoship (UK) Ltd. to continue along the improvement curve towards excellence. We believe the GREEN AWARD CERTIFICATION is an attractive incentive towards gaining further Third Party Management and Consultancy business from potential clients. I respectfully borrow a coined phrase that some readers may recognise.

Novoship (UK) Ltd. says 'Raise the Bar!'

Andrea Trevisan

New Green Award surveyor

Green Award has from August 2005, a new addition to her team. Andrea Trevisan fulfills the role as Ship Surveyor Trainee.

After the successful fullfilment of an intensive education and training programme he will be appointed Green Award Surveyor. The education and training programme is developed by Green Award and approved and accredited by the Nautical Institute.

Andrea was born and raised in the vicinity of Venice, Italy. He graduated in 1993 from the Nautical College of Venice and began his career at sea serving as Cadet Officer on tanker ships for a major Italian oil company. Feeling the need to broaden his horizons, Andrea sailed the world for 10 years onboard various famous cruise liners, including the inaugural season of the Grand Princess (world’s largest cruise ship in 1998). He became a Master Mariner in 2000 and in December of 2004 moved to the Netherlands (The Hague). In his sea time he followed many courses and trainings, in Europe and America, and became a Certified STCW Trainer in the US last year.

In August 2005 he stepped down as First Officer and joined the Green Award Bureau in Rotterdam. He is very enthusiast to be part of the Green Award Foundation and its mission and looks forward to meeting the motivated Green Award crews and managements.

New Zealand and Australia

Both countries were visited by Green Award in September. To over 30 stakeholders a presentation on Green Award was given and debated.

The advantages of the holistic Green Award system were discussed and in general there was a very positive response to the Green Award Scheme as a tool to enhance sustainable trade in the region.
The Scheme was valued as complementary to existing regulations, safety measures and industry vetting schemes.

The aim of the Scheme to exert a positive influence on the quality of ships and safe and environment conscious shipping activity in coastal waters and at the ship/port interface was well recognised.

For the near future, we will coordinate with established as well as new industry and government partners for possible implementation of the system.

Watch this space for future developments!

Green Award surveys worldwide

In talking to the various ship owners and managers, we have discovered that many believe that Green Award surveys are conducted only in Rotterdam. This, however, is incorrect.

Green Award surveyors conduct surveys in many parts of the world for example: UK, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Maroc and other Mediterranean countries.

Surveyors travel regularly to the USA and the Middle East to conduct multiple vessel surveys. Multiple vessel surveys ("cluster surveys") are in fact less costly for the ship owner because the cost is divided over more then one vessel. Ship owners that wait until their vessels call in Rotterdam are more than welcome to inform Green Award of their vessels eta’s and other port calls.

Annual Report 2004

We are proud of the Annual Report 2004 that is a tribute to the seafarers.

The Green Award Foundation is convinced that the greatest strength of quality shipping lies in the people who are the heart of shipping business: the seafarers. We would like to pay tribute to them by including in this Annual Report a series of photos, reflecting daily life on board.

The Green Award report is scheduled to be sent in the second half of October. A PDF-file of the Annual Report will be made available in the next Green Award Newsflash.

Pro Sea Foundation: "The Sea is worth the effort"

Large groups of people work professionally with or at sea: the ‘Marine Professionals’. For these people the sea is even more important. This brings along a special responsibility.

Therefore Marine Professionals need to have a basic understanding of how the sea functions, where it is vulnerable, how our activities affect the sea and what a sector, a company or an individual can actually do to ‘work’ as sustainable as possible. The ProSea foundation stimulates, develops and organises Marine Environmental Courses for Marine Professionals.”

A course was held on the island Texel, The Netherlands in October of this year. Green Award was happy to contribute to this course by delivering a presentation on Green Award and what Green Award stands for. It was good to experience that the attending Marine Professionals are fully aware of the consequences of environmentally friendly operation of ship and crew.

Green Award is a firm supporter of this course and has incorporated it into the ranking criteria for the Green Award certification:

7300.7  Is the company providing training/courses for ship's personnel and superintendents with respect to "Marine Environmental Awareness"(training programs to be recognised/supported by the administration).

Hoist the flag!

We would like to ask the cooperation from our certified vessels in our strive to promote Green Award.

Every certified ship has been issued a Green Award flag. We would be very happy if the Green Award flag is hoisted when entering the port. We also welcome pictures of the (new!) flag being hoisted to add to our Newsflash.
