Annual Report 2005

We are proud of the Annual Report 2005 as a tribute to the seafarers.

The Green Award Foundation is convinced that the greatest strength of quality shipping lies in the people who are the heart of shipping business: the seafarers. We would like to pay tribute to them by including in this Annual Report a series of photos, reflecting daily life on board.

We would like thank BP Shipping (British Excellence), Novoship (Krasnodar) and Knutsen (Vigdis Knutsen) for their kind cooperation.

A PDF-file of the Annual Report is available here.

Port of Sullom Voe - discontinuation Green Award incentive

The Port of Sullom Voe was one of the first ports to join the Green Award scheme in the nineties. It was with great disappointment to hear that the oil tanker traffic in this port reduced dramatically over the last year.

For this economical reason, but also because of the quality of oil tankers that call being improved, the Shetland Island Council had to reconsider further participation with the Green Award incentive scheme. Also on behalf of the Green Award certified oil tankers, we like to thank the Port of Sullom Voe for their participation and their professional input in the Green Award Board of Experts by Captain George Sutherland at that time. We wish a bright future for the Shetland Islands and Sullom Voe.

Sallie Knutsen - full score

Shuttle tanker SALLIE KNUTSEN, in annual Green Award survey on 30 August, is the first vessel in the Green Award scheme to obtain full score in element 5401 (the “sulphur requirements”).

The vessel Chief Engineer presented transparent evidence, that the sulphur content in the bunkered fuel was 2% average over the last 2 (!) years and for the last three bunkerings the sulphur was below 1.5 %. This ship is SECA ready now!

The vessel is also equipped with the KVOC system, significantly reducing the emission of cargo vapor during loading.

All together, SALLIE KNUTSEN is one of the least incriminating tankers to our precious atmosphere.

Officers Training Seminar American Eagle Tankers (AET)

Green Award participated in an officer seminar for those serving on the AET fleet. The seminar was held in Kolkata, India, during the last week of September.

Green Award’s participation was intended to inform the AET officers in detail about the Green Award Foundation’s mission and objective. Green Award Managing Director Jan Fransen delivered a presentation including a detailed explanation of the requirements and audit methods. Jan Fransen was impressed by the topics discussed and the commitment of the officers to AET and observed a sincere drive towards continuous improvement and team work. Green Award would like to thank the AET management for this opportunity.

Mooring equipment

Amongst many others, the Green Award Foundation believes that improvements are very much needed for mooring equipment. Why? Still too many incidents and near misses related to mooring and mooring operations occur.

Also in the light of the human element, Green Award started its own research on this topic and strives to issue new (manageable) requirements for its ranking paragraph in the audit questionnaires. It is quite well possible indeed, that this might result in a normative document based on industry guidelines addressing performance indicators for wires and ropes. The results of this research might affect the upcoming and next revision of the Green Award Requirements.

During our research we became aware that the OCIMF publication “mooring equipment guidelines” is currently under revision, which we applaud.

International Marine Awareness Course

The ProSea foundation organises International Marine Awareness Courses (IMAC) for the shipping sector on a regular basis. The courses aim to provide high quality information on the marine environment, marine environmental issues and Sustainable Development to the maritime sector. The assumption is that a better understanding leads to more sustainable choices in the day-to-day shipping practice.

Green Award has supported this course since 2001 by presenting Green Award objectives and day to day operation as well as participating in the expert forum. Because Green Award values this course, the ‘Marine Awareness Course’ can be found as one of the ranking questions during the Green Award office audit.

In September, Green Award surveyor Rob den Heijer gave a presentation and took part in the expert forum at an IMAC course on the Dutch island Texel. In October, Karin Struijk gave a presentation during the IMAC in Frederikshavn, Denmark.

Both presentations were given on the last day of the course. Both courses (and the Green Award lectures!) were highly appreciated by those attending, a mix of students from shipping academies in Holland and Denmark, business participants from shipping companies and representatives of the Dutch navy.

In addition to the courses for shipping academies, ProSea also organizes dedicated in-house Marine Awareness Courses in cooperation with and for shipping companies. In 2006 four of these in-house courses were conducted. More information about ProSea foundation objectives and courses can be found at www.prosea.info.

European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) relocated to Lisbon

On 14th September, 450 guests attended the inauguration of EMSA in Lisbon. Green Award attended this inauguration as well.

The event took place in the presence of José Manuel Barosso, President of the European Commission, Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates Carvalho Pinto de Sousa , Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary General of the IMO, Jacques Barrot, European Commission vice-president and Commissioner for Transport.

EMSA, created in the aftermath of the Erika disaster, aims to contribute to the enhancement of the overall maritime safety system in the Community. Its goals are, through its tasks, to reduce the risk of maritime accidents, marine pollution from ships and the loss of human lives at sea.

We wish EMSA all the best for the future!

Green Shipping World Conference

The Green Shipping World conference was held in Copenhagen on the 2 nd October 2006. After a fine selection of presentations and lively debates, it was a pleasure to conclude that corporate responsibility seems to take off in the marine industry.

Manufacturers addressed topics like sea water scrubbing, cold ironing and water ballast treatment. A classification society highlighted the environmental challenges in Arctic shipping. The ports of Long Beach and Helsinki shared their experiences with environmental friendly port operations.

Three shipping companies, two major liner companies and an offshore contractor, elaborated on corporate responsibility, environmental measures and fuel cell technology. Representatives from the European Commission and the IMO informed the audience about their actions with respect to air emissions. The Shipping Federation of Canada explained their database of Environmental Programs and the North Sea Foundation about the Clean Ship concept.

Jan Fransen, Managing Director of the Green Award Foundation was honoured to chair this event and had pleasure in observing the good steps taken in the time elapsed since previous Green Shipping conferences.
