ACPA Conference Canada

Green Award participated in the 50th Conference of the Association of Canadian Port Associations (ACPA) in St. John, NB, Canada on 17-20 August 2008.

Richard Day, Director Marine Safety, Transport Canada, (on the photo) addressed Green Award as an important sustainability and environmental initiative in which the Canadian ports can continue to provide a leadership role.

Maher Hanna, Director Weir Engineering, reported on the outcome of the business case, related to the benefits and costs for Canadian ports participating in the Green Award scheme. One of his conclusions was that the costs related to the participation in the Green Award scheme would be negligible related to the total port fees collected.

Jan Fransen outlined the key elements of the Green Award program and looked at where it is headed in the future.

In 2007 ACPA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Green Award Foundation supporting the development of this program in the Canadian context. This initiative will require further collaboration with Transport Canada and other stakeholders as the federal government seeks to create a Green Award Program for all of Canada. It is expected that next steps will be taken soon.
