Rotterdam Pilots ISPO certified

The Dutch Pilot's Organisation Rijnmond is the first pilot's organisation in the world which has been certified according the International Standard for Pilots Organisations (ISPO). The ISPO code has been developed by the EMPA (European Maritime Pilots Organisation) in cooperation with Lloyd’s Register.

EMPA decided to develop the ISPO-Code on the initiative of queries from the tanker industries. The ISPO code is way ahead of any guidelines or directives from authorities and links up very well with the ISM-Code and ISO 9000/2000. Compliance with the ISPO-Code guarantees for example that a review of the passage plan with the Master of a ship and the pilotage procedures are documented and agreed upon prior to announcement of the voyage-plan.

Mr Juha Tulimaa (President of the European Maritime Pilots’ Association (EMPA) handed the ISPO certificate over to Mr. E.M. (Eric) van Dijk, chairman of the Rotterdam Pilots, during an official ceremony in Rotterdam on 19th January 2005.

From the start of Green Award, the Dutch Pilot's Organisation has been a firm supporter of Green Award. Green Award is grateful to the pilots for their continuous trust in the development of Green Award and its participants. For the third successive year, every Green Award ship received a financial incentive for every call at Rotterdam.

Mr. Jan Fransen, Green Award's deputy managing director, took the opportunity to demonstrate Green Award's gratitude by handing over an official plaque for Green Award incentive providers. He also expressed the hope that other pilot organisations will follow the initiative of the Dutch Pilot's Organisation Rijnmond soon since the good interaction between pilots and ship's crews are of paramount importance in preventing accidents.
