Municipality of Bergen op Zoom (the Netherlands) has joined the Green Award scheme and, since the 1st of January 2013, Green Award certified inland barges have been rewarded with a 5% discount on the port dues. On the 27th of February 2013 the Green Award management handed over the Green Award board to Alderman Ton Linssen from the municipality of Bergen op Zoom to mark this occasion.

The ceremony took place in the City Hall in Bergen op Zoom. Green Award’s Managing Director Mr. Jan Fransen and deputy Managing Director Ms. Struijk presented the board to Mr. Linssen honouring the municipality’s decision to encourage green inland shipping.

In his speech Mr. Fransen emphasized the importance of ports’ support to the scheme for further motivation of inland shipping entrepreneurs to invest in clean and safe technologies and equipment. 

Inland navigation vessels holding the Green Award certificate sail under the flags of Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, Switzerland and the Netherlands. 13 ports provide discounts on port dues to Green Award certified inland barges, 6 banks reimburse 50% of the certification costs to its clients, and from the 1st of January 2013 an insurance company contributes 200 euro to its clients that have ships certified by Green Award.
