New chairman for the Green Award Foundation 
                           Professor Psaraftis

The official chair handover took place on the 28th of November, 2013, during the Green Award Committee meeting in London. Harilaos Psaraftis, who is a professor of transport optimization at the Technical University Denmark, will head the scheme for the next few years.

Mr. Psaraftis took over from the former chairman Mr. Pieter Struijs, one of the founding fathers of the Green Award scheme. Harilaos N. Psaraftis is currently Professor of transport optimization at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Department of Transport. Prior to that, he has also served as faculty member at MIT and at the National Technical University of Athens. In addition to his academic endeavours, Psaraftis has significant administrative and industrial experience, having served as CEO of the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP) for close to 5 ½ years.

Welcoming the new chairman, Green Award Managing Director Mr Fransen said: “the management believes that this new appointment is at the best interest of our certificate holders. Prof Psaraftis is an independent party with impressive technical knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the shipping industry. His enormous experience and credentials speak for itself.”

Mr. Psaraftis stated “I am quite honored to be selected as the new chairman of the Green Award Foundation. Green maritime transportation is full of challenges that require a full cross-disciplinary approach to be effective and win-win. In succeeding Pieter Struijs, I definitely have some large shoes to fill, but I hope that I will be able to do so with the assistance of the rest of the board and of the Green Award Team.”
