Greener, cleaner, and more efficient ships – Green Award's latest benchmarking report

Every year, we release a benchmarking report that showcases Green Award certified ships against the Green Award certification requirements, the Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework. The 2023 report reveals that approximately 75% of all our certified ships and companies score at least 65% above standard in terms of safety and environmental compliance.

Benchmarking Focus

Our 2023 benchmarking report focused on assessing the progress being made towards more sustainability with additional attention to energy transition. On top of the office audit and ship survey results, we benchmarked the following selected topics on all Green Award certified shipping companies: stern tube, fatigue management, sewage management, grey water management, and extra personnel.

  • Stern Tube Lubrication: Installation of water lubrication systems, air-type systems, and use of environmentally friendly lubricants is critical for marine environmental protection.
  • Fatigue Management: Proper awareness and management on fatigue on board is vital for crew safety and efficiency.
  • Sewage Management: Effective sewage management systems with their effluents tested to protect the marine environment.
  • Grey Water Management: Grey water can be extremely harmful to the marine environment. Prevention of discharge at ports-, coastal-, and sensitive-areas can reduce this harm.
  • Extra Personnel: Having extra personnel on board ensures that all members of crew are accounted for, effectively staffed to be able to give the required attention to ship maintenance, and mentally fit and aware.

How are Green Award certified ships contributing to energy transition?

We are proud of the significant efforts being made by our certificate holders towards safer and cleaner sea and driving towards net zero marine emission well ahead of 2050.

Looking Ahead

It’s been a long journey towards safe and sustainable shipping. Slowly but surely, one ship at a time, we are witnessing the desired results, but the journey has only begun. The objective of our new strategic plan is to increase the recognition and impact of being Green Award certified by expanding partnerships and promoting the values of safer and cleaner waterborne transport.
