MARPOL convention cornerstone of Green Award's certification requirements

Rotterdam, 28 September 2023

Today, on World Maritime Day, the international maritime community celebrates 50 years of MARPOL, the global convention for the prevention of pollution from ships. With this celebration the International Maritime Organization not only underlines its commitment to protecting and preserving the marine environment, but also its dedication to building on the existing foundations as it moves towards a brighter future.

For the Green Award Foundation, the MARPOL convention is one of the cornerstones of the requirements in our seagoing programme, for almost 30 years. For certification of ships, we go “above and beyond” the basic requirements of MARPOL, making Green Award certified ships and their owners/managers the front-runners of the maritime industry.

Green Award’s vision: safer and cleaner waterborne transport creates a sustainable future.
